All About Widgets
From Webopedia

What Is a Widget?
The word widget (pronounced wih-jit) is one of those words that now has far too many definitions. The dictionary defines it as a small mechanical device; a gadget, or a manufactured item that is unnamed. But we all know in the Internet era, a widget is much, much more.

In a programming context, it's a generic term for the part of a GUI that allows the user to interface with the application and operating system. Widgets display information and invite the user to act in a number of ways. Typical widgets that you may encounter include buttons, dialog boxes, pop-up windows, selection boxes, windows, toggle switches and forms.  The term widget also can be used to refer to either the graphic component or its controlling program or to refer to the combination of both.

Today when people use the word widget, in a Web 2.0 world, they are referring to piece of self-contained code — a small application actually, that opens up a doorway to a much larger application.  To this end, you can find widgets that provide stock quotes and news, search boxes for Google, eBay and other popular search-based Web sites, clocks, counters, games, feeds and more.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that widgets used on the desktop or Web are also called gadgets. In fact, in Windows Vista, Microsoft uses the word gadget, but it is still a widget.

Encrypting File System (EFS) provides file encryption for files on NTFS file system volumes. Once you encrypt a file or folder, you work with the encrypted file or folder just as you do with any other files and folders. You do not have to manually decrypt the encrypted file before you can use it, open and change the file as you normally do. An intruder who gains unauthorized physical access to your encrypted files or folders will be prevented from reading them. You encrypt or decrypt a folder or file by setting the encryption property for folders and files by right clicking the folder > Advanced > Encrypt Data to Secure Data. If you encrypt a folder, all files and subfolders created in the encrypted folder are automatically encrypted.

Datagate: The Next Inevitable Corporate Disaster?

McAfee and Datamonitor Go Behind the Headlines to Assess the Impact of Data Loss

Data leakage. More than 60 percent of respondents interviewed in a ground-breaking survey conducted by Datamonitor have experienced it within the last year, and 33 percent believe it could put them out of business. They rate loss of intellectual property and financial information as the two most valuable classes of data-with the average estimated cost of leaked financial data reaching $1.68 million. Could it be the next disaster that sweeps the global business landscape? It is a momentous time for large organizations all over the world. And with increasing pressure to stay compliant, enterprises need to start taking precautions immediately.

  • A data breach that exposes personal information could cost companies an average of $268,000 to inform their customers—even if the lost data is never used
  • Sixty-one percent of respondents think that data leakage is the doing of insiders, and 23 percent believe those leaks are malicious
  • Nearly half (46 percent) of respondents said they do not debrief or monitor employees after they have given notice that they are leaving the company
  • Only 23 percent of respondents were able to estimate the total annual cost of data leakage; the remaining 77 percent were unable to provide an assessment or quantify the costs.

The average annual cost of data leakage was $1.82 million

Samsung’s Multifunction Laser Printers Earn Buyers Laboratory ‘2007 Pick of the Year’ Awards

Samsung Electronics today announced that two of its monochrome multifunction printers, SCX-5530FN and SCX-6322DN, have been awarded “Pick of the Year” courtesy of Buyers Laboratory, in the small workgroup and the mid-size workgroup monochrome multifunction printer categories, respectively.  Buyers Laboratory, with a 45-year history, is recognized as the leading independent office-equipment test laboratory and business-consumer advocate in the U.S. market.

Buyers Laboratory’s “Pick of the Year’ awards are presented bi-annually, celebrating products that have been praised for their all-around superior performance. The assessment process includes in-depth testing and industry-wide comparisons to determine the reliability, performance, efficiency, user-friendliness, affordability, and innovation of individual products. Buyers Laboratory is widely regarded as the foremost authority of product evaluations, both off-line and online.  This can be attributed to its annual report detailing comprehensive information and industry specifications/pricing for office document-imaging equipment, including copier, printer, fax machine and multifunction printer units,

As the “Pick of the Year” award recipient of the small workgroup monochrome multifunction printer category, the Samsung SCX-5530FN provides small offices with the critical time- and cost-saving integrated document management functions previously available only to large-size businesses. “The SCX-5530FN offers users the full multifunction features found in larger machines, but has a very small footprint and an easy-to-use control panel,” explained Paul DePaolo, Buyers Laboratory Senior Test Engineer. He went to add: “Another really nice feature is the USB port on the front of the device that allows users to print from or scan to a USB thumb drive.”

Meanwhile, the Samsung SCX-6322DN, winner of the ‘Pick of the Year’ award in the mid-size workgroup monochrome multifunction printer category, facilitates optimal user convenience and impressive overall economy. “The SCX-6322DN has a redesigned control panel that greatly enhances the ease of use over the previous generation of products,” noted DePaolo. “The compact QWERTY keypad greatly simplifies the process of entering e-mail addresses at the control panel. Making both of these Samsung products even more attractive is the fact that they offer a per-page supplies cost that is among the lowest for products in their class.”

“It’s a great honour to receive these awards for our monochrome laser multifunction printers, a testament to the continued hard work and commitment Samsung has constantly delivered,” said J.J. Lee, senior vice president of the Digital Printing Division of Samsung Electronics. “The award confirms Samsung’s leadership in providing reliable and efficient printing solutions to business users. Samsung’s multifunction printer lineup offers the industry’s most complete set of options for business customers and we are most pleased that Buyers Laboratory has recognized the high performance and exceptional output of our products.”

The award-winning SCX-5530FN, designed for small-business users, offers easy-to-use network connectivity, high-speed printing at 28 ppm (A4), standard duplex printing, digital scanning, and direct USB functions. Its unique direct USB interface enables PC-less scan-and-save to a USB memory stick. In addition, the ID-copy function enables automatic two-side copying of an ID, for more convenient use within the office where ID items need to be duplicated.

The Samsung SCX-6322DN, the top pick of the mid-size workgroup monochrome multifunction printer category, is a versatile and powerful copier-centric A4 multifunction printer with 4-in-1 capability (printer, copier, scanner, and fax), plus network-ready features. This printer provides the fastest duplex printing speed of 19 images per minute, along with 28 pages per minute for single-side print/copy. Furthermore, its enhanced network features support the highly valued network functionality required by mid-size business users.

Large piles of papers are continually getting greater and we are forever filing.  Is there a way to store these digitally?

If you have a digital scanner or multifunction device, the answer is yes.
The nice thing about these units are that they come ready to use right out of the box and are set up to scan to a folder on your network or PC. Scan your document, give it a name and store it on your computer. If you are looking for a little more complexity, there is third party software that can be purchased in addition to the scanner. HP multifunction printers have HP Digital sending software with their systems. You just have to make sure that the software will be compatible with your system.
If you are looking for a solution like this to reduce your paper file then give a VODA sales person a call and they will be happy to assist you. Please keep in mind however that not all hard copies can be thrown out and legally there are certain documents that must be kept around.
