Happy New Year from VODA Computer Systems

As we look forward to the coming year, the staff and Management would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a safe and happy New Year in 2008!

2007 Technology Showcase a huge success!

On November 29th, 2007 VODA Computers hosted their 2nd Annual Technology Showcase at the beautiful Grand Okanagan Resort in Kelowna, BC. Over 130 end-users came to listen to the top manufacturers in the IT industry and check out their latest product lines. It was a full house. Manufacturers such as IBM, HP, Cisco, McAfee, Lenovo, Extreme Networks, Fortinet, Data Domain, Sun Microsystems, HP ProCurve, Enmor Technologies, Transition Networks, Samsung, NEC, TOPS, and Aruba Networks were there. It was an excellent opportunity to mingle with the representatives from these top companies. We look forward to having another successful event next year. We would like to thank all who attended. See you again next year.

Why Managed Services are important to your network?

At VODA Computer Systems, we have been working hard to enhance your IT experience by introducing proactive services to our support offering.

“Technology is the #1 budget item after HR, yet it is the least understood. Allow us to use our expertise to help you reduce your maintenance costs and increase the service quality and reliability of your IT infrastructure.”

One of the hardest things in maintaining a computer network is predicting what may fail and when. Managing a network by only reacting to issues can lead to lost time. Determining there is a problem, requesting help, waiting for technicians to be dispatched, waiting for diagnosis, and then more waiting for the problem to be resolved – All of this is lost time and productivity to your organization.

At VODA Computer Systems, we have a better way to serve you.

Why Choose VODA Computer Systems as your Technology Support Partner?

We can help keep your key business tools like email and internet up and running by working to reduce the amount of issues that you experience. With our VODA Care 2.0 programs we’ll have technicians looking after your network to deal with issues BEFORE they affect your productivity.

Our VODA Care 2.0 programs can address your critical business needs by:

Giving you peace of mind: Let us be your network watchdog, enabling you to focus on your core business activities instead of putting out fires when network disruptions occur.

Enabling continuing business productivity by proactively detecting and resolving issues BEFORE they happen through scheduled preventative maintenance activities that are designed to keep your network operating as efficiently as possible.

Safeguarding the integrity of your network by providing regular checkups to ensure that operating system patches, antivirus updates and other important elements of your network are being proactively guarded. We reduce the likelihood that your network will be compromised by a virus, worm, hacker or other malicious attack.

Stabilizing and rationalizing your IT spending: Through our proactive approach, we will remove ‘emergency service call’ from your vocabulary and help to create more predictable IT spending patterns.

Access to a wealth of IT expertise, tools and experience: Our staff of over 17 technicians has awealth of combined experience and is accredited byCisco, IBM, CompTIA, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Lenovo and others. We use industry-leading management tools to provide you with the highest level of service possible.

Don't Use Alkaline AA - Use Rechargeables

If your digital camera supports AA batteries, read the camera manual and check to see if it also supports a kind of battery called NiMH. These batteries tend to last much longer than most standard alkaline AA batteries - plus, they are rechargeable, so they can be re-used for quite a long time. Granted, the cost of four NiMH batteries plus a charger is more expensive than four alkaline batteries, but you'll more than make up the difference in costs once you recharge and use the batteries a few times.

Digital Photo Frame

The perfect gadget for sharing photos with the computerless is the digital picture frame. This is a device about the size and shape of an ordinary picture frame. It contains an LCD screen, which displays multiple photos in a slideshow format, and it connects to the Internet via phone line to download new pictures and information to display on the screen.

Ask the VODA Expert

Q: Where are my emails saved in Outlook Express? How do I keep my Outlook Express emails if I bought a new computer?

A: Some people think that by backing up the C:\Program Files\Outlook Express folder, their emails are saved. Quite simply, the emails are not located there, and this method will not work.

The easiest way to find where your emails are located, especially if you’re not able to boot to that Windows installation, is to use the search feature of Windows. Go to Start -> Search or Start -> Search -> for files and folders… , depending on how your Windows is set up. From there, in the “what do you want to search for” section, click “all files and folders”. Click “more advanced options” and make sure “search system folders” – “search hidden files and folders” – “search subfolders” are all checked.

Now in the “all or part of the filename:” field, type in “.dbx” (don’t forget the fullstop before the letters dbx) and press Search. In a moment, you should see all your outlook express folders, such as inbox, sent items etc. In the column to the right, it should display the folder that these files are located in. You may need to maximise the search window to see the full path. The path should look something like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{a bunch of letters and numbers}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\

You can right click on any of the search results (example inbox.dbx) and then click Open Containing folder. From there you can copy these files to another computer. The size of these files depends on how many emails you have. You can burn to a cd, copy to usb memory stick or any way you like to move these files to another computer.

Once you have a copy of these .dbx files handy, you can copy and paste them back into the same directory on the new computer. Note that the “bunch of numbers and letters” will be different, but that doesn’t matter. If this directory does not exist, open Outlook Express, cancel any wizards that pop up, and close the program. The folder will be created, and Outlook will create some empty .dbx files (inbox.dbx, sent items.dbx etc). Copy and paste the files from your backup, and overwrite the files if it asks you.

The next time you open Outlook Express, all your emails and custom created folders will be there.
